Every January, the American Diabetes Association publishes the Standards of Care in Diabetes. The guidelines are a living document and change throughout the year; however, the January update is the seminal changes for the entire document. In addition to medication recommendations, the guidelines now emphasize the role of Community Health Workers in the management of health-related disparities affecting patients with diabetes. Pharmacotherapy continues to be driven by comorbid conditions and the impact of clinical outcomes, like a cardiovascular or renal disease.
